Canada resumes importation of Brazilian beef products
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has notified Brazil's Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa) of its approval to update the International Sanitary Certificate (CSI) for exporting fresh, boneless beef and raw processed beef products from Brazil to Canada.
With this approval, beef products can now be exported from the Brazilian states of Rio Grande do Sul, Paraná, Acre, and Rondônia, as well as from 14 municipalities in Mato Grosso and five in Amazonas. These regions have been recognized by the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH) as free of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) without vaccination since 2021.
Currently, eleven meat processing plants in these areas are authorized to export beef products. Santa Catarina, the only state previously recognized by Canada as free of FMD without vaccination, has just one authorized facility.
"The reopening of this market has been eagerly awaited by Brazil's animal protein sector, especially in these states, which have been unable to export raw beef to Canada since March 2022 due to their cattle not being vaccinated," said Carlos Fávaro, Brazil's Minister of Agriculture and Livestock.
For exports of cooked beef to Canada, the vaccination requirement has been lifted, allowing any authorized meat processing plant, regardless of its state of origin, to export the product.
"In addition to this progress for the sector, we are working with the Brazilian Embassy in Canada to remove the vaccination requirement for raw beef as well," said Roberto Perosa, Mapa's Secretary of Trade and International Relations.
In 2023, Brazil exported over $10.541 billion worth of beef, totaling 2.28 million tons. Canada imported $39 million in Brazilian beef (8,192,380 kg), marking an 18% increase in value compared to 2022.
