Brazil showcases leadership in bio-inputs and regulatory advancements at ABIM
In Basel, Switzerland, Carlos Goulart, Brazil's Secretary of Agricultural Defense, presented the country's regulatory landscape for biological products at the Annual Biocontrol Industry Meeting (ABIM). He emphasized how the Brazilian government is driving the expansion of the bio-inputs sector as part of its commitment to sustainable agriculture.
Brazil is a global leader in the use and production of bio-inputs, including inoculants, biofertilizers, and biological pest control products. Its regulatory framework is among the most advanced globally, serving as a model for other nations transitioning to biological-based products.
"Today, Brazil is at the forefront of agricultural biological product adoption, with nearly 50% of Brazilian farmers using these products," noted Goulart.
Brazil has been regulating and innovating in pest control products for almost 20 years. Currently, the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa) has registered 662 low-impact agricultural products. "Nearly 75% of these products were introduced between 2008 and 2024, illustrating that while regulatory progress is significant, full adoption of biologicals in the field takes time," Goulart added.
Brazil’s bio-input production is growing at an annual rate of 30%, outpacing the global growth rate of 18%.
"Promoting bio-inputs requires continuous collaboration between the government, producers, and researchers to ensure product safety and effectiveness while fostering innovation and the adoption of new technologies in the field," Goulart emphasized.
The Brazilian delegation at the event also included Edilene Cambraia, Director of the Department of Plant Health and Agricultural Inputs, and Tatiane Nascimento, Head of the Division of Formulated Product Registration at Mapa.
ABIM
Organized by the International Biocontrol Manufacturers' Association (IBMA) and FiBL, the Annual Biocontrol Industry Meeting (ABIM) took place from October 21 to 23. The event brought together specialists from around the world to discuss new products, market opportunities, research findings, and the latest regulatory updates.
As the largest global event dedicated to biological products, the 2024 edition attracted approximately 1,800 participants from over 50 countries, along with more than 150 exhibitors.
BIO-INPUTS
Bio-inputs are products made from biological components, such as microorganisms and plant extracts. They are used in the production, storage, and processing of agricultural products, helping to increase environmental sustainability across the supply chain.
Bio-inputs play a crucial role in combating pests and diseases while enhancing nutrient availability for plants. This contributes to improved soil fertility and promotes sustainable agricultural practices, as these products are biodegradable.
