Brazil celebrates second market access for agricultural products in the United States this year
The Brazilian government has received approval from the United States to accept the International Plant Health Certificate (CSIV) for the export of used cooking oil (UCO) from Brazil.
UCO, a byproduct of vegetable oils and fats used in kitchens and food industry frying, is utilized as a raw material for biofuels, including biodiesel and sustainable aviation fuel.
To meet U.S. requirements, the Department of Inspection of Plant Origin Products (DIPOV) of the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock will issue certification of the product's traceability, identity, and origin, based on audits of the self-control procedures of storage and export facilities.
The export of UCO from Brazil to the United States represents a significant market opportunity, driven by the growing American demand for biofuels. In 2023, the U.S. imported approximately 1.4 million metric tons of UCO, enough to produce 2.27 billion liters of biofuels. The total import value was about USD 1.66 billion. The main UCO suppliers to the U.S. were China, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Chile.
This is the second market access granted by the U.S. for Brazilian agricultural products this year, following the authorization in January for the export of animal-origin gelatin and collagen. Last year, Brazil's agribusiness sales to the U.S. exceeded USD 9.82 billion. The U.S. is Brazil's second-largest trading partner.
With this new market access, Brazilian agribusiness has achieved its 146th commercial expansion in 51 countries since last year. In 2024 alone, 68 new markets have been accessed in 29 countries.
These achievements are the result of joint efforts by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
