BILATERAL MEETINGS
Brazil and Portugal sign Memorandum for agrifood products at G20 AWG
At the G20 Agriculture Working Group (AWG) meeting in Mato Grosso, Brazil’s Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, Carlos Fávaro, engaged in a series of strategic bilateral meetings to enhance international cooperation in agriculture and livestock. These discussions aimed at promoting sustainable agricultural practices and launching joint technical cooperation projects.
In a significant meeting with Portugal’s Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, José Manuel Fernandes, Brazil and Portugal signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) focused on regulating the safety and quality of agrifood products. This MoU fosters institutional and technical cooperation between the two nations.
“This agreement reflects the balance and reciprocity in Brazil-Portugal relations, while opening new doors for dialogue and partnerships in other sectors,” Minister Fávaro emphasized.
Additionally, various topics of mutual interest were discussed. Brazil sought Portugal's support in sanitary and phytosanitary negotiations with the European Union.
INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION
India
Minister Carlos Fávaro and India’s Minister of Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare, Ramnath Thakur, reaffirmed their commitment to ongoing dialogue and technical cooperation for the benefit of farmers. “Brazil is eager to maintain and expand trade relations with India. Our goal is to develop mutual capabilities in agribusiness, particularly in the pulses and dairy sectors,” Fávaro remarked.
Minister Thakur extended an invitation to Fávaro to explore India’s agricultural systems, noting that he “would surely be surprised.”
United Arab Emirates
In a meeting with Amna Al Dahhak Al Shamsi, Minister of Climate Change and Environment of the United Arab Emirates, Minister Fávaro introduced Brazil’s National Program for the Conversion of Degraded Pastures into Sustainable Agricultural and Forestry Production Systems (PNCPD), reaffirming Brazil's commitment to sustainability.
“Our objective is clear: to end deforestation. The way we achieve this is through our program for the recovery of degraded pastures,” Fávaro stated.
Italy
During another bilateral meeting, Minister Carlos Fávaro also met with Italy's Minister of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty, and Forests, Francesco Lollobrigida, to discuss technical cooperation and technological innovations between the countries.
Minister Lollobrigida praised Brazil's G20 AWG as a critical platform for collaboration, noting that Italy, as the current G7 president, views the event as an essential convergence point for addressing global agricultural challenges.
United Kingdom
In discussions with Daniel Zeichner, Minister of State for the UK’s Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), Minister Fávaro expressed Brazil’s commitment to partnering with the UK on global food security and nutrition. The ministers discussed their shared goals of eradicating hunger and advancing sustainable agriculture with high productivity and resilience to climate change.
