Brazil achieves second-highest market access record in October for agricultural exports
In October, Brazil's agricultural sector achieved its second-highest number of new market accesses in the history of international trade. Over the past 31 days, 34 new market opportunities were secured across 12 countries, nearly matching the total for all of 2019, which saw 35 market accesses. Only September of this year surpassed this performance, setting a record with 55 new markets across 14 countries.
These market accesses covered a wide range of agricultural sectors. Notable approvals included cotton lint and seeds to Saudi Arabia; corn, sorghum, soy, and brachiaria seeds to Gabon; Setaria seeds to Colombia; cocoa beans and yerba mate to countries in the Eurasian Union (Russia, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan); sheep and goat semen and embryos to Cuba; macadamia nuts to Japan; and sheep and goat meat to Qatar, among others.
According to data from the Secretariat of Trade and International Relations of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa), Brazil secured 192 market accesses in 48 destinations over the past 10 months. Since early 2023, aligning with President Lula’s third term and Minister Carlos Fávaro’s leadership at Mapa, Brazil has achieved a total of 270 market accesses in 61 countries.
“Accessing new markets is proof of Brazil’s valuable attributes, such as high health standards, sustainability, competitiveness, and the reliability of our sanitary services and productive sector—qualities that are recognized in over 200 nations and territories. This success is a result of collaborative efforts led by Ministers Carlos Fávaro and Mauro Vieira and underscores the crucial role of our agricultural attachés in bilateral trade negotiations. More than 65% of the market accesses during this administration have occurred in regions with attachés, and with our network expanding from 29 to 40 posts, we expect many more records to come,” emphasized Luis Rua, Mapa’s Secretary of Trade and International Relations.
Expanding into global markets has been vital for the growth of Brazilian exports. In September, Brazil's agribusiness exports hit a record USD 14.19 billion, marking a 3.6% increase compared to the same month in 2023. Over the past 12 months, from October 2023 to September 2024, exports in the sector totaled USD 166.19 billion, a 1.8% increase from the USD 163.19 billion recorded in the previous year.
These achievements are the result of joint efforts by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with additional support from ApexBrasil in promoting international trade activities.
