“We are in an environment rich with opportunities for global agribusiness,” Minister Fávaro highlights in meeting with Spanish counterpart
In a meeting with Spain's Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food, Luis Planas Puchades, Brazil's Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, Carlos Fávaro, emphasized the importance of fostering dialogue in international trade, particularly in advancing discussions on sanitary and phytosanitary standards.
“These bilateral meetings are essential for aligning our agendas and jointly overcoming shared challenges. We are closely monitoring the struggles of European and Spanish producers as they strive to remain competitive under the constraints of climate change,” Fávaro said, noting that producers in both countries face similar climate-related challenges.
The Ministers also discussed new production methods, with a particular focus on investments in advanced and sustainable technologies. Fávaro highlighted Brazil's National Program for the Conversion of Degraded Pastures into Sustainable Agricultural and Forestry Production Systems (PNCPD), which aims to recover and convert up to 40 million hectares of low-productivity pastures into arable land over the next decade.
“Brazil currently has 90 million hectares of degraded pastures, 40 million of which are highly suitable for food production. Therefore, it is unnecessary to encroach on forests to increase production. On the contrary, we should focus on reforestation,” the minister stated.
Minister Fávaro also referenced a letter he had previously delivered to the European Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Janusz Wojciechowski, and sought support from the Spanish minister on the matter.
“We are in an environment rich with opportunities for global agribusiness,” Fávaro concluded.
