Water Resources: ABC, National Water Agency (ANA) and the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP) hold a project monitoring and evaluation meeting on the issue
The 2nd Monitoring and Evaluation Meeting of the Project "Support for the management and monitoring of water resources in CPLP countries", coordinated by the Brazilian Cooperation Agency (ABC), of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MRE), in partnership with the National Agency for Water and Basic Sanitation (ANA), within the scope of the CPLP Network of Directors of Water Resources, took place on April 5th, as part of the annual meeting held by the CPLP Network of Directors of Water Resources.
At the monitoring and evaluation meeting, ANA presented a report on the activities developed by the project in 2020 and 2021, with its main advances and challenges, and also proposed the 2022-2024 work plan. Among the actions planned for the biennium is the updating and maintenance of the CPLP Water Portal, a proposal partially funded by the South-South technical cooperation project implemented by ABC, ANA, and UNESCO.
The project's objective is to support the governments of Angola, Cape Verde, Mozambique, Saint Thomas and Prince, East Timor, Guinea-Bissau and Equatorial Guinea in the management and monitoring of their local water resources, through the transfer of technology on local hydrological monitoring networks and systems, as well as the training of local officials in water resources management. The initiative also envisages the exchange of experiences for the development of legal and institutional frameworks for water resources management in each country.
SDG 6
One of the priority topics of the meeting was to discuss the status regarding the implementation of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6 - Drinking Water and Sanitation - in both countries.
Two technical experts from ANA's Water Resources Planning Superintendence (SPR) made presentations on the Agency's experience in calculating SDG 6 indicators for the CPLP Directors and technicians.
The methodologies and experiences absorbed by the regulatory agency are contained in the second edition of the document "ODS 6 in Brazil: ANA's view on the indicators". The publication contains updates of the historical series of the indicators of the eight targets of SDG 6 and improvements in their calculation due to methodological improvements and new data available.
Network of Directors of Water Resources
The monitoring meeting took place in the wake of the Meeting of the CPLP Network of Directors of Water Resources, whose purpose was to hold debates on the challenges and perspectives regarding water issues in each member state. The meeting also marked the change of the pro-tempore Presidency of the Network. Cape Verde passed the baton of the presidency to the Angola directorship.
The Network was formally institutionalized in 2018, in alignment with the United Nations Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development and its 17 Goals (the SDGs), adopted in 2015.
The Meeting of General Directors of Water Resources is an instrument created to facilitate mutual cooperation among the CPLP member countries and with international organizations, in addition to leveraging cooperation and technical capacity building among their water resources administrations.
