South-South cooperation strengthens Suriname's agricultural and food security
The actions are aimed at strengthening Suriname's technical capacities in order to strengthen the country's agricultural and food security.
The initiative, coordinated by the Brazilian Cooperation Agency (ABC) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is being developed in partnership with the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAPA). On the Chilean side, the Agricultural and Livestock Service (SAG, from the acronym in Spanish), the Chilean Agency for Food Safety (ACHIPIA), the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries (MAAHF) of Suriname and the Chilean Agency for International Development Cooperation (AGCID) are participating.
Phytosanitation
The Phytosanitary Service of Suriname (LVV) plays a crucial role in protecting local agriculture from pests, as well as regulating imports and certifying exports of plant products. Other activities were carried out within the scope of the cooperation project, such as: training Surinamese government officials on plant quarantine, with the aim of preventing the introduction and spread of pests; support and training for MAAHF technical staff in drafting legislation and supporting the creation of the National Fruit Fly Control and Eradication Program; and technical visits to the interior of the state of São Paulo in the area of agricultural health, with the participation of representatives from Chile and Suriname. This initiative strengthens South-South cooperation, promoting solidarity and sustainable development, in line with the SDGs of the 2030 Agenda.
