Equipment donated by Brazil, in partnership with UNDP, to get to Haiti this week
The Brazilian Cooperation Agency (ABC), under the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MRE), the National Apprenticeship Service of the Industrial Sector (SENAI), and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) implement a South-South Cooperation project in Haiti, with the objective of increasing access to vocational training, especially for young people, qualifying them for better jobs, and enhancing the possibilities for increasing income and improving the quality of life.
The initiative encompasses strengthening the Haitian National Institute for Vocational Training (INFP), as well as delivering training programs to teachers and managers, and exchanging good practices with Brazil. It included building a Vocational Training Center and holding a series of face-to-face and virtual training sessions for INFP's teams of managers, instructors, and administrative personnel. The training courses were delivered by SENAI.
As part of this initiative, 73 tons of equipment and supplies will be sent to Haiti this Friday, September 20, to equip the Vocational Training Center built under the project, consisting of 12 buildings located in the city of Les Cayes, in southern Haiti.
The cargo will be shipped out from Guarulhos airport at 4:20 a.m. on Friday, the 20th, on a Boeing 747 airplane, which was chartered exclusively for this purpose, and is expected to arrive in Port-au-Prince (the capital city of Haiti) at 10:20 a.m. on the same day.
UNDP-Haiti is making the necessary arrangements for clearing customs and transporting the goods to Les Cayes, in coordination with local authorities, other UN agencies, and the Brazilian Embassy in Port-au-Prince. The cargo is expected to arrive in Les Cayes by the 31st of this month.
After the equipment is delivered, the project will provide support for installation, and offer training courses. The center will be able to offer vocational training to the Haitian population in fields such as metalworking, civil construction, information technology, refrigeration and air conditioning, as well as automotive mechanics, with an installed capacity for training up to 960 students a year, according to local demand and conditions.
The project “Support for Technical and Vocational Education and Training in Haiti”, financed by the Haiti Reconstruction Fund (FRH), and administered by the World Bank, counts on contributions from Brazil.
