A Brazilian humanitarian mission is being deployed in Canada to fight wildfires
At the request of the Canadian government, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva ordered the deployment of a Brazilian humanitarian mission to Canada to support the fight against the forest fires that have hit that country since March 2023 and have intensified since last June. The Brazilian Cooperation Agency (ABC) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, responsible for Brazilian humanitarian cooperation, will coordinate the mission, which will take place between July 21 and August 24, including the time spent in transit.
Comprising 104 forest firefighting specialists, the Brazilian mission is expected to work in Canada's most affected forests and remain in that country for a period of one month.
Professionals from the following agencies are participating in the mission: Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (IBAMA) and Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBIO), both from the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MMA); National Secretariat for Civil Protection and Defense of the Ministry of Integration and Regional Development (MIDR); National Public Security Force (FNSP), of the Ministry of Justice and Public Security (MJSP); and the military fire departments of the States of Acre, Amapá, Amazonas, Bahia, Ceará, Espírito Santo, Goiás, Maranhão, Mato Grosso, Minas Gerais, Pará, Paraíba, Paraná, Pernambuco, Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Sul, Rondônia, Santa Catarina, São Paulo and Tocantins, and the Federal District.
Cooperating with the organization of the mission are the Ministries of Defense, Transport and Finance, as well as the National Council of Military Fire Departments of Brazil (LIGABOM) and other federal and state offices.
By internal legal determination of the Canadian government, the Brazilian expenses with the sending of the humanitarian mission will be reimbursed by that country, which will also offer aircraft for the transportation of Brazilian experts and their equipment.
